How does getting vaccinated in pregnancy protect my baby?

When you get vaccinated, your body makes protective antibodies to defend against harmful viruses and bacteria. During pregnancy, these protective antibodies pass through the placenta to your baby. These antibodies give your newborn baby early protection against infections like the flu and pertussis (whooping cough) until they are old enough to get their own vaccinations.

How do I know vaccines are safe for me and my baby?

Before a vaccine is approved in Canada, it must pass strict safety and effectiveness standards. Vaccines are carefully tested and go through three phases of clinical trials, involving thousands of participants, to confirm they are safe and work as intended. Health Canada thoroughly reviews all the evidence from these trials and only approves vaccines that are proven to be safe and effective.
